5 Steps To Installing New Roofing
Regular roof inspections are an important part of maintaining a house. If the shingles are significantly worn around the corners, it may be time to install a new roof.
Installing new roofing can be a long and tiring process. Here are 5 tips to make the process significantly easier.
Step 1: Pry off Shingles Starting at the Top of the Roof
Because of the way shingles overlap, it will be much easier to pull or pry off shingles beginning with the row near the crest of the roof.
If the shingles are pretty worn, it should be easy to remove many sections of shingles using gloves. The remaining ‘stubborn' shingles may require roofing shovels and pry bars.
Step 2: Clear Away Any Excess Waste
Having a clean roof is very important for properly installing new roofing. Set up a tarp or trailer beneath the edge of the roof and push or toss waste over the edge of the roof.
Step 3: Install the Roofing Paper
Beginning at the bottom edge of the roof, unroll the roofing paper and let it hang roughly ? of an inch off the edge. A hammer stapler with ? inch staples will secure the roof paper while avoiding the larger holes created by nails.
Step 4: Place the Shingles
Shingles should be laid row-by-row beginning at the bottom of the roof. The crest of the roof should be capped with overlapping shingle tabs. Closely packed, uniform shingle rows will ensure a longer lasting roof.
Step 5: Clean Up Properly
Use a nail magnet to sweep the roof and the ground below for stray nails. Any nails left behind can cause serious injuries when stepped on.
