A Clog Free Home
By Maria McCutchen
There are several types of drainage systems; from septic drainage systems, to gutters, air conditioners and more. Any type of drainage system has the potential of getting clogged. Whenever water and other elements pass through a system, there is always the potential of elements getting hung up and causing a backup or clog. Fortunately, there are ways to keep your systems draining properly.
Tips in keeping your systems free of clogs are:
Air conditioning lines - If a drain line in your AC system becomes clogged, it can be fairly simple to clear. Typically, a Wet/Dry Vacuum will do the job. First, you must find where the drain line ends outside of your house. Next, place a vacuum hose over the drain. You can get a stronger suction or vacuum motion by placing a large plastic bag, even a wet rag will work, around the end of the hose that you have attached to your drain.....this will also help to block off any gaps of air to give a stronger vacuum suction. Suction the line for a few minutes. If it's still clogged, repeat the steps.
Rain Water Drainage system - You will need to get on the roof and go along the gutter system, step by step, removing all the debris that is in the gutter or downspouts; leaves, twigs, pine cones, dirt, debris, anything that is in the system that could be blocking the drainage. You can then put gutter guards along the system to help keep future blockages out. French drains, trenches and channel drains also has the potential of getting clogged. Using leaf catches, filters and screens is your preventive solution. Using drain rods and other plumbing tools will help if you already have a problem.
Septic system - Septic systems can be tricky. You can try using a product known as Rid-Ex to help control blockages, but it the system becomes blocked despite, then you may need to call in the professionals. This is expensive and time consuming, not to mention - messy. But professionals know where to go and what to do to unclog, clogged pipes.
Clearing different drainage systems may require research or at least a visit from a professional. If you don't feel comfortable trying to clear your clogged pipes, then call someone who can. It may end up being worth the money to avoid further problems.
