The Importance of Rain Guttering on Your Home

The Importance of Rain Guttering on Your Home

DAnna Shelley

Often people wonder if adding a gutter system to their home will actually make a difference. The truth is that it really will make a very noticeable difference. A gutter system will keep you from having a large amount of water fall onto your head and body during a heavy rainstorm. When the rain is pouring down from the sky, it tends to run down the valley of your roof and ends up falling right down in front of the doors of your home. This is the last place that you want a huge downpour, especially when you are hosting a party, or have company coming to visit.

Another reason to add gutters to your home is for the protection of the fascia around the top of the home. Just below your roof line, you have wood that surrounds the home perimeter and this wood may tend to rot much faster if there is water pouring directly onto it. The rain gutter system will keep the water flowing in one position and the drainage will run strictly toward the downspouts that have been added. This will also help with foundation protection during drought situations. The water will flow to certain areas and allow water to keep the foundation area moist and cut down on movement. Adding a rain gutter system is recommended if you live in a high rain or snow area.

When you do have a rain gutter system installed on your home, you must watch out for leaves and twigs piling up inside of them. It is recommended that you add a gutter guard or a "black magic" coating to the inside of the gutters to prevent the back-up. You will be able to find these things if you call a roofer or gutter installation company. They will let you know which system would work best in your area. If you do not use a guard, you should have a company come out in the early part of each year to clean out the "trash" from inside the gutters. This will help to keep the flow of water continue toward the downspouts. If there is blockage at any point, the water will tend to pour over the edges of the gutters.
